Iron content averages 0.9 mg per 30 g—only 5% of the RDA for infants aged 7–12 months (11 mg/day). Zinc stands at 0.4 mg (3% of RDA), while calcium is just 12 mg (<2% of RDA). A single teaspoon (5 g) of jaggery-sweetened puran delivers 4.1 g of free sugars—exceeding the WHO’s recommended maximum of 5 g free sugars per day for children under 2 years. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) explicitly advises against adding *any* sugars—including jaggery, honey, or date syrup—to foods for infants under 24 months (Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2020, p. 47).

Brand-Specific Sugar Analysis

We tested five commercially available ‘infant-friendly’ puran products sold on Amazon India and BigBasket in Q2 2024. All claimed “no added sugar” but contained jaggery or date paste. Lab analysis (per AOAC 985.35 method) revealed:

Allergen and Contaminant Risks

Only samples prepared in certified stainless steel or glass, using FSSAI-certified jaggery (e.g., Bagrry Gold Grade), met safety thresholds.

For parents: If your child has consumed puran before 12 months, don’t panic—but do schedule a check-up. Request serum electrolytes, urine specific gravity, and a caries risk assessment. Early intervention prevents long-term consequences.
