The 10-Point Playground Inspection Cheat Sheet
1. Equipment Spacing: Are structures far enough apart?
Look at the distance between pieces of equipment—especially between the swing set and anything else (slide, climber, bench). Swings move in arcs. Kids run unpredictably. A collision zone must be kept clear.
Pass: Minimum 6 feet (72 inches) between swing set outer edges and any other structure or barrier (fence, wall, pole, or even another swing set). For non-swing equipment, minimum 4 feet clearance on all sides.
Fail: Less than 6 feet between swings and adjacent structures—or less than 4 feet around slides, climbers, or spring riders.
Remediation tip: Step off the swing’s arc yourself. Stand where the seat reaches its furthest forward and backward points. Can you walk freely without ducking, stepping over, or turning sideways? If not, it’s too tight. Move your kids to a different area—or skip this playground entirely. Note: Many older parks built before 2000 ignore this rule. Don’t assume compliance.
2. Surface Depth: Is the ground under equipment deep enough to cushion falls?
Falls account for more than 70% of playground injuries—and surface quality is the #1 factor in whether those falls result in scrapes or skull fractures. Depth matters. So does condition.
Pass: Loose-fill surfacing (wood chips, shredded rubber, sand) is at least 12 inches deep *under* and *extending at least 6 feet beyond* all equipment parts where a child could fall—especially swings, slides, and climbers. Surface is evenly distributed, not washed away, piled up, or compressed into hardpan.
Fail: Depth less than 12 inches anywhere within the use zone—or visible soil, grass, or packed-down material peeking through.
Remediation tip: Carry a ruler or folding tape measure (yes, really—it’s lightweight and fits in any pocket). Poke it straight down into the chips where your child would land. Check three spots: directly under the swing seat at rest, at the base of the slide exit, and mid-point under the highest rung of the climber. If it sinks in easily and hits resistance only after 12+ inches, you’re good. If you hit dirt or concrete at 6 inches? Walk away. And report it—call the park department or use your city’s 311 app. Document with a photo.
3. Protrusion Hazards: Are there bolts, screws, or hooks sticking out?
Protrusions are silent snags. They catch clothing, backpacks, and—most dangerously—neckwear like scarves or drawstrings. A sudden tug can cause strangulation or whiplash.
Pass: All bolts, screws, and connectors are recessed, capped, or covered with smooth plastic/metal guards. No metal shaft extends more than 1/16 inch beyond its nut or washer. No open S-hooks, broken chains, or dangling wires.
Fail: Any exposed threaded rod, sharp-edged washer, unguarded bolt head, or hook-like shape that could catch fabric or skin.
Remediation tip: Run your palm—not fingertips—slowly along railings, ladder rungs, and slide edges. Your hand will catch on anything protruding. Also, squat down to toddler eye level: small hazards vanish from adult sightlines. Found one? Don’t let your child use that piece until it’s fixed. If it’s a public park, note the exact location (e.g., “third rung, left side of blue climber”) and report it immediately. Bring duct tape? Wrap the hazard temporarily—but only as a stopgap until proper repair.
4. Swing Chain Integrity: Are chains or ropes intact and properly anchored?
Swings fail silently—until they don’t. Cracked welds, corroded links, or frayed ropes won’t announce themselves. But they’ll bear weight until they can’t.
Pass: Chains are uniform in thickness, free of rust pitting or kinks. Hooks attaching chains to top beams show no bending, cracking, or wear grooves. Ropes are pliable, not brittle or fuzzy. All seats hang level, with no twisting or sagging.
Fail: Visible rust flakes, chain links that wiggle loosely, rope fibers separating, or seats tilted more than 5 degrees.
Remediation tip: Gently shake each swing side-to-side and front-to-back while applying light pressure. Listen for creaks or rattles from the beam connection. Look up: Are the anchor points solid? Does the beam itself look warped or split? If you see green corrosion (verdigris) on copper-plated chains, that’s normal. Red/brown rust? That’s failure waiting to happen. Skip the swing. And never let kids ride swings with damaged hardware—even “just for a minute.” One overloaded swing (e.g., two kids on a single seat) can accelerate fatigue in compromised chains.
5. Platform & Step Security: Are elevated surfaces stable and slip-resistant?
Decks, platforms, and stair treads are high-risk zones—not because of height alone, but because kids pause there. They balance. They turn. They look down. A wobble or slick surface turns hesitation into disaster.
Pass: Platforms don’t flex or bounce under light pressure. Steps have consistent rise/run (no “surprise” tall steps). All surfaces feature textured non-slip coating or grooved rubber inserts—no bare, polished, or algae-coated metal or plastic.
Fail: Spongy, warped, or loose decking boards; missing or worn non-slip strips; stairs with inconsistent heights or slippery surfaces.
Remediation tip: Press down firmly on the center of any platform or landing with your foot. Does it dip or shift? Try sliding your shoe sideways—if it glides, it’s too slick. Rainy days expose this instantly: if water pools or sheets off instead of beading, the surface is compromised. For stairs, count steps up and down—if the third step feels significantly higher than the second, it’s a trip hazard. Don’t let kids climb if the platform wobbles or stairs lack grip. Better yet—choose a different structure.
6. Opening Entrapment Risk: Are gaps sized to prevent head or limb entrapment?
This one trips up even vigilant parents. It’s not about “big enough to fit through”—it’s about “just narrow enough to trap.” Openings between rails, bars, or netting can catch heads, arms, or legs—and hold them fast.
Pass: All openings are either smaller than 3.5 inches (so a child’s head can’t enter) or larger than 9 inches (so if a head enters, it can pass fully through). No “in-between” gaps.
Fail: Openings measuring 3.5–9 inches—especially in guardrails, ladder sides, or mesh panels.
Remediation tip: Carry a toilet paper roll (yes, seriously—it’s ~3.5 inches wide) or use your fist: make a tight fist and hold it sideways. If it fits snugly in a gap but won’t go all the way through, that gap is dangerous. Common trouble spots: horizontal rails on climbing walls, spaces between swing chains, and diamond-shaped netting. If your child’s head fits partway in but won’t go deeper—and their shoulders won’t follow—that’s entrapment risk. Avoid it completely.
7. Slide Exit Zone: Is the landing area clear, level, and obstruction-free?
Kids fly off slides faster than you’d expect. Even short slides generate momentum. A single rock, root, or uneven patch turns a joyful descent into a faceplant.
Pass: At least 6 feet of unobstructed, level surfacing beyond the slide exit. No curbs, tree roots, poles, benches, or other equipment within that zone. Exit ramp slopes gently—no abrupt drop-off.
Fail: Anything within 6 feet of the exit: rocks, mulch piles, bike racks, picnic tables, or uneven ground.
Remediation tip: Stand at the slide exit and take six natural adult steps forward. Mark that spot with your shoe. Is it clear? Now crouch and look along the ground—you’ll spot hidden roots or dips your standing view missed. If the exit drops more than 12 inches vertically before leveling out, that’s a “drop slide,” which requires extra surfacing depth (18+ inches) and signage. If you don’t see signage—and the drop feels steep—don’t let toddlers use it.
8. Climbing Component Grip: Are handholds and footholds secure and appropriately sized?
Climbing structures tempt big moves—but safety starts with trust in every grip. Loose holds, oversized rungs, or slippery textures undermine confidence and control.
Pass: All handholds are tightly secured, with no wobble or rotation. Diameter is 1.25–1.5 inches for preschoolers; 1.25–2 inches for school-age kids. Surfaces are textured—not smooth plastic or wet metal.
Fail: Wobbly or spinning handholds; diameter smaller than 1.25 inches (risk of finger entrapment) or larger than 2 inches (too hard to grip); smooth, wet, or icy surfaces.
Remediation tip: Try each handhold yourself before letting your child climb. Twist it. Pull down. If it shifts, skip it. Also check spacing: rungs or holds should be no more than 12 inches apart vertically for preschoolers, 15 inches for older kids. If your child has to reach excessively or stretch awkwardly, it’s not developmentally appropriate—or safe.
9. Moving Parts Function: Do spinners, bridges, and rocking elements operate smoothly?
Pinch points hide in plain sight—in rotating discs, seesaw pivots, and suspension bridges. A momentary lapse—a dropped toy, a shoelace, a trailing sleeve—can lead to crushed fingers or trapped limbs.
Pass: All moving parts rotate or pivot freely with no grinding, sticking, or sudden jerks. Gaps between moving and stationary parts are either <1/4 inch or >1 inch—no in-between. No exposed springs, gears, or hinges.
Fail: Grinding noise, resistance, or jerking motion; gaps measuring ¼–1 inch; visible springs or unguarded pivot points.
Remediation tip: Spin a merry-go-round slowly by hand—does it coast smoothly? Push a seesaw down—does it rebound evenly? Watch the gap between the spinner rim and its base. If your pinky finger fits comfortably in the space but won’t go deeper, that’s likely safe. If it slips in past the first knuckle? Too big. If it won’t fit at all? Too small—and potentially a pinch hazard. Supervise closely here: remind kids to keep hands clear, sit fully on seats, and never stand on spinning equipment.
10. Overall Maintenance & Cleanliness: Is the space actively cared for?
Safety isn’t just hardware—it’s habit. A well-maintained playground signals ongoing attention. Neglect—trash, graffiti, broken glass, or overgrown vegetation—isn’t just unpleasant. It’s predictive.
Pass: Trash cans are emptied regularly. No broken glass, syringes, or hazardous debris. Vegetation is trimmed back from equipment and paths. Signage is legible and includes age recommendations.
