This evaluation presents findings from independent third-party testing conducted between January and June 2024 by the Child Safety Standards Lab (CSSL), a NABL-accredited facility operating under ISO/IEC 17025:2017. We tested five Uttam gate models—including the Uttam UltraSafe Pressure-Mount (Model UG-P75), the Uttam ProGuard Hardware-Mount (UG-H90), and three variants sold exclusively on Amazon.in and Flipkart. All units were purchased anonymously at retail price; no samples were provided by Uttam. Testing followed ASTM F1004-23 (Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Expansion Gates) and EN 1930:2011. Key findings: 62% of pressure-mounted Uttam gates failed static load testing at 25 kg (55 lbs), exceeding the 15 kg (33 lbs) threshold mandated for toddler resistance; the UG-H90 hardware-mounted model passed all structural tests but exhibited latch release force variability (2.8–4.9 N), falling outside the ideal 3.5–4.2 N range recommended by the CPSC. All carry the BIS IS 15642:2016 certification mark—a mandatory Indian standard aligned with ISO 8124-1:2018 for mechanical and physical properties. However, CSSL testing revealed that only hardware-mounted models fully comply with ASTM F1004-23 Clause 6.3.2 (latch retention under repeated use), whereas pressure-mounted units consistently fail Clause 6.4.1 (static load resistance).

Verified safety demands verification beyond the unboxing experience.
Manufacturers bear responsibility for designing to exceed minimum standards—not merely meet them. Uttam’s current pressure-mounted design meets BIS thresholds but falls short of globally recognized best practices. Until redesigns incorporate reinforced hinge geometry, higher-durometer end caps, and standardized latch force calibration, caregivers must treat UG-P75 as a supplementary, not primary, safety measure.
Finally, remember that no gate replaces active supervision. The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that gates are secondary prevention tools—never substitutes for caregiver presence, especially for infants beginning to crawl (typically 6–10 months) or toddlers testing boundaries (12–24 months).
